Archana of Chitradurga town in Karnataka had engaged the services of DTDC courier service to send a neatly wrapped package containing 8 sarees to her cousin sister Meghana in Bangalore. It weighed 5 kg and 60 gms. Each saree was worth Rs. 1500. She paid up Rs. 320 for the service.
However the packet arrived in a damaged state and the sarees had been damaged. Meghana rushed to the Bangalore office of the DTDC which did not help her to solve this problem. The package now weighed only 3 kg. and 930 gms. Two sarees were missing from the package!
But DTDC refused to sort out the problem and she complained to the consumer forum in Chitradurga which found the courier service guilty of deficient service and unfair trade practice. It ordered DTDC (which remained absent for the hearing, thus proving their misdeeds) to pay up Rs. 10,000 as compensation to Archana along with Rs. 3000 with interest at 9 per cent. It also ordered them to pay up Rs. 5000 as costs and Rs. 5000 for causing mental agony to her!
