Fight the army of tree killers!
If you love trees, and who doesn’t, these facts will make your blood boil.
7 million tonnes of paper are thrown away every year in the UK alone. It requires 80 million trees to make this paper!
8.5 billion cans, half of food, half for drinks, are produced each year in the UK – enough to reach to the moon and back and halfway there again!
Every year an average European family with two children, throws away 50 kilos of paper (six trees) 60 kilos of metal and 45 kilos of plastic. That last item may not sound a lot, but it is equivalent to 13,500 supermarket bags!
But there are three ways to deal with all this rubbish says Michael Norton in his book 365 Ways to Change the World.
Reduce: look carefully at all your rubbish. You will be surprised to find the treasures nestling inside the dustbins and the attics and even on the roadside, if you are in India!
Reuse. Turn your favourite old dress or jeans into a slinky hand back for shopping. Make a doll out of all that plastic or try something new, to use them up. Stitch up several to make a thick handbag or even a garden decoration.
Recycle. 80 per cent of domestic rubbish can be recycled, including paper, glass, metal and plastic!
