One way to help the poorest of children to get out of their homes, overloaded with work and worries, and brutal poverty, is to gift them with a room to read. Michael Norton in his book 365 ways to change the world shows that we can join the Room to Read programme that provides communities with schools and literacy.
The girl child especially is the last one to be given the chance to study in poor families. She becomes a small mother for her younger siblings, and has no chance to read or study.
In its first four years Room to Read helped over 510,000 children. Built 110 schools and 1,475 libraries. Published 33 children’s books in local languages. Donated 300,000 new books and funded 975 long-term scholarships.
