What could an adorable, innocent, gorgeous red rose have to do with the planet? A lot, says the very interesting book called How Bad are Bananas? The Carbon Footprint Of Everything by Mike Berners-Lee. He says we all want to do the right thing for the planet! Is he also talking about those bottled water making fiends?! They certainly don’t care for the planet! But the less we talk about them, the more we will preserve our sanity!
Mike tells us the real impact of each of the things we do and buy. The red rose when picked from your garden is Zero CO2e, with no inorganic fertilizer used.
But this stunner becomes guilty of 350 g CO2e grown in Kenya and flown by air
2.1 kg CO2e grown in a heated greenhouse in the Netherlands!
A single red rose could have the same impact on climate change as about four and a half kilos of bananas.
He adds could the banana ever replace the rose on Valentine’s Day? If you try this low-carbon alternative, please let me know how you get on!
If you insist on out-of-reason cut flowers, you either have to put them on a plane or grow them using artificial heat. Both of these are bad news for climate change!
So why not ditch the red rose and make a nice banana cake or banana milk shake for your girlfriend or boyfriend instead?!!
