Cat-Gardening: buy citrus oils and plant extracts to fight garden pests!
- Citrus fruits make oils that kill garden pests on contact by poisoning them! These oils do a very useful work: they repel fleas, ants, and silverfish, for weeks and are safe around people and pets. The active ingredient is d-Limonene. Look for it on the label and you can also try Orange Guard.
- You can even make this lemon rinse to kill fleas on your cats, and dogs by: cut up two lemons and pour boiling water over them. Let the lemons soak overnight. Sponge the lemony liquid over your pet – it kills fleas on the spot. Orange skins can also be used for this home made remedy.
- Garlic is another fierce foe against garden pests. Plants that also repel pests are marigold, nasturtium, onions, rue, mint, rosemary, sage and tansy. Garlic Barrier is a commercial product available but you can also make your own homemade garlic repellent.
Rodale’s All-Purpose Sprapy: liquefy 1 garlic bulb and 1 small onion, add 1 teaspoon powdered cayenne pepper, and mix with 1 quart water. Let steep for 1 hour, strain through cheesecloth, then add 1 tablespoon liquid soap. Mix well and use. Leave the soap out and you can use this recipe to flavor your chili!
