M.J. Srinivas, State Regional Secretary of Mysore had bought a quarter bottle of wine luxury liquor from Quality Wines in Mysore. Though the maximum retail price for the wine was Rs. 132.77 the shop charged him Rs 148 for it.
Srinivas complained to the Mysore consumer disputes redressal forum about the shop’s unfair trade practice. The forum President Sri H.M. Shivakumar Swamy found Quality Wines guilty of unfair trade practice and ordered it to pay up a whopping Rs. 10,000 as compensation the canny consumer along with Rs. 2000 as costs.
If the shop owner (who did not appear at the court hearing) does not pay up this amount within one month it will be liable to be imprisoned by the court.
The good news is that consumer courts all over India are getting more powerful with this new rule which allows them to jail defaulting wrong doers who do not follow their orders!
