We need to fall a little out of love with our cars for the Planet!
We love our cars but in 6000 miles a car will produce roughly its own weight in CO2 emissions. Car fumes are largely responsible for asthma rates increasing fourfold in the UK. Cars make us lazier, unhealthier. Over a third of car journeys are less than two miles in distance.
Research in the US has shown that suburban car owners (where car ownership tends to be at its highest) weigh six pounds more than city car owners! In city centres people use buses, walk, or cycle and are more fit!
So what is the answer? Reduce car use wherever practicably possible, support alternative forms of transport, use cars more efficiently, says Leo Hickman in his book A Good Life The Guide to Ethical Living.
Of each 1000 units of pollution in urban areas, 560 come from cars, and just seven from buses and coaches!
